Common name: Malaria parasite. Causes Benign Tertian Malaria.
Vector: Female Anopheles mosquito (definitive host).
Primary host: Human (intermediate host).
๐ Life Cycle of Plasmodium vivax
Plasmodium vivax completes its life cycle in two hosts:
- ๐ฆ Sexual cycle (Sporogony): In female Anopheles mosquito.
- ๐ง Asexual cycle (Schizogony): In human liver and RBCs.
๐ง Asexual Cycle in Human (Schizogony)
1️⃣ Pre-Erythrocytic Cycle (Liver Stage)
Infective stage Sporozoite injected by mosquito → enters liver cells → forms Cryptozoites → undergo schizogony → produce Cryptomerozoites. Liver schizont ruptures releasing merozoites into blood.
Hypnozoites: Some sporozoites remain dormant in liver (cause relapse).
2️⃣ Erythrocytic Cycle (Blood Stage)
Merozoites enter RBCs → form Trophozoite (signet ring stage) → Schizont → Merozoites released → infect new RBCs. Cycle repeats every 48 hours.
3️⃣ Gametogony
Some merozoites differentiate into ๐ก Macrogametocyte (♀) and ๐ข Microgametocyte (♂) in RBCs.
๐ฆ Sexual Cycle in Mosquito (Sporogony)
Mosquito ingests gametocytes during blood meal → in gut: Fertilization → Zygote → Ookinete → Oocyst (on stomach wall) → produces Sporozoites → migrate to salivary glands → infective to human.
๐ค Pathogenicity & Symptoms
- Febrile paroxysms: Cold stage → Hot stage → Sweating stage
- Fever recurrence: Every 48 hours (tertian malaria)
- Anaemia: Due to RBC destruction
- Splenomegaly: Enlargement of spleen
๐ก Important Key Points (Exam Focus)
- Infective stage to human: Sporozoite
- Infective stage to mosquito: Gametocyte
- Site of fertilization: Mosquito gut (stomach)
- Signet ring stage: Trophozoite in RBC
- Relapse caused by: Hypnozoites in liver
- Schizogony: Asexual multiplication in human
- Sporogony: Sexual cycle in mosquito
- Incubation period: 10-14 days
