๐ What is IUPAC Nomenclature?
IUPAC stands for International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. It provides a systematic method for naming organic compounds so that each compound has a unique and universally accepted name. The IUPAC name consists of three parts: Prefix (substituents), Word Root (number of carbon atoms), and Suffix (functional group).
| Number of C | Word Root |
|---|---|
| 1 | Meth |
| 2 | Eth |
| 3 | Prop |
| 4 | But |
| 5 | Pent |
| 6 | Hex |
| 7 | Hept |
| 8 | Oct |
| 9 | Non |
| 10 | Dec |
๐ Functional Group Priority Order (Decreasing)
| Class | Suffix | Prefix |
|---|---|---|
| Carboxylic acid | -oic acid | carboxy- |
| Sulphonic acid | -sulphonic acid | sulpho- |
| Ester | -oate | alkoxycarbonyl- |
| Acid halide | -oyl halide | halocarbonyl- |
| Amide | -amide | carbamoyl- |
| Nitrile | -nitrile | cyano- |
| Aldehyde | -al | formyl- |
| Ketone | -one | oxo- |
| Alcohol | -ol | hydroxy- |
| Amine | -amine | amino- |
| Alkene/Alkyne | -ene/-yne | — |
For alkanes, suffix is -ane. Longest chain is selected, numbered to give lowest locant to substituents.
๐ก Key Naming Rules
- Longest chain rule: Select the longest continuous carbon chain.
- Lowest locant rule: Number so that the principal functional group gets the lowest number.
- Alphabetical order: Substituents are written in alphabetical order (di, tri, sec, tert ignored; iso, neo considered).
- Multiple bonds: If both double and triple bonds present, double bond gets preference in numbering if at equal distance.
