๐ Nucleus Discovery & Structure
Rutherford's ฮฑ-scattering experiment discovered nucleus. Nucleus contains protons (Z) and neutrons (N). Mass number A = Z + N.
Nuclear density: ฯ ≈ 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg/m³ (constant, independent of A).
⚡ Mass-Energy & Binding Energy
Einstein's relation: E = mc². 1 amu = 931.5 MeV.
Mass defect (ฮm): ฮm = [Z mโ + N mโ] - M. Binding energy: B.E. = ฮm × 931.5 MeV.
Packing fraction = (M - A)/A. B.E. per nucleon is maximum for Fe (≈8.8 MeV).
๐งฌ Isotopes & Atomic Mass
Isotopes: Same Z, different N. Atomic mass unit: 1/12th mass of ¹²C atom.
๐ฅ Nuclear Reactions
Fission: Heavy nucleus splits (e.g., ²³⁵U + n → lighter nuclei + energy).
Fusion: Light nuclei combine (e.g., ²H + ³H → ⁴He + n + 17.6 MeV).
Annihilation: Particle + antiparticle → energy (photons). Pair production: ฮณ → e⁻ + e⁺.
